In charge of the exchequers into which royal revenues were paid, early bearers of the Chalmers name thrived as loyal and trusted servants of successive monarchs, while others became kinsfolk of the clans of the wild and unruly Western Highlands. Many were martyred in the cause of their faith during the bitter wars between Crown and Covenant, while others gave their lives in defence of the ultimately doomed cause of the Royal House of Stuart. In more peaceful times, James Chalmers, born in Arbroath in 1782, was the bookseller, printer, and newspaper publisher who in 1834 invented the adhesive postage stamp, while in the world of broadcasting Judith Chalmers is a versatile popular British radio and television broadcaster who was honoured with an O.B.E. for her services in 1994. The vibrant and colourful story of bearers of the Chalmers name, both of yesteryear and today, is recounted here.
