With the proud and defiant motto of “I remain unvanquished”, stalwarts of Clan Armstrong, renowned for their strength particularly in battle, were entrusted as armour bearers to Scottish monarchs. With their main territory the frequently turbulent and lawless Borders, they gained both fame and infamy as fearless reveirs, or raiders, who preyed not only on their northern English counterparts but also on their own neighbouring clans and families. In more peaceful times, and stamping their mark on the international stage, Neil Armstrong was the American astronaut of Borders roots who in 1969 became the first man to walk on the moon – taking with him a piece of Clan Armstrong tartan.
