It was with sword in hand that the ancestors of bearers of the James name today first arrived on British shores.
This was through the Norman Conquest of 1066 and the defeat of the last Anglo-Saxon king of England at the battle of Hastings – but in later centuries many found fame through a range of more peaceful pursuits.
