It was through Sir Adam de Gordon, a staunch supporter of the warrior king Robert the Bruce, that the family’s fortunes began to truly thrive – with Sir Adam entrusted by Bruce in 1320 to carry the historic Declaration of Arbroath, which sought the Pope’s support for Scotland’s sovereign rights, to Rome.
The loyalty of the Gordons was richly rewarded with the grant of further lands that included Strathbogie in Aberdeenshire, and further high honours and distinction followed that included the earldom of Huntly, with the 9th earl created a duke in 1684.
Shot through with high drama, the colourful and inspiring tale of the Gordons is presented here.
