The Cunninghams can be found defending their original native soil of Scotland as far back as the late 13th century when they helped to repel would-be Viking invaders at the Battle of Largs, and this proud martial tradition continued under the renowned Cunningham Earls of Glencairn, who were famed as ‘bonnie fighters’. The family were no less ardent in their support of the Protestant Reformation during its markedly turbulent times, while an Earl of Glencairn was both an intimate friend and important patron of the great national bard Robert Burns. While not fighting external enemies in the form of Vikings or English armies, the Cunninghams were also infamously involved in a bloody feud that spanned three centuries with their Ayrshire neighbours the Montgomerys. Recounted here is the high drama and romance that is the proud story of the Cunninghams of both yesteryear and today.
