The origins of the Clan Cooper are shrouded in mystery.
But by the 17th century one branch of the family had become major landowners.
Part of their Edinburgh estate remains intact to this day.
However, their power and influence lasted barely a century, destroyed in the main thanks to an act of vengeance carried out by Oliver Cromwell.
Since then many a Cooper has made a name for himself on the world stage, including the Scot who became one of England’s greatest poets.
