A name present in the British Isles from the earliest of times, ‘Cook’ figures prominently in the rich and colourful saga that is the historical record – with many of its bearers gaining international fame in fields ranging from exploration and politics to the stage. James Cook was the eighteenth century English sea captain, cartographer and explorer who, after a number of nautical feats that included the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand, was killed by islanders on Hawaii in 1779, while Thomas Cook was the entrepreneur who in 1841 laid the basis for what has become the Thomas Cook Group travel enterprise. In politics, Joseph Cook served from 1913 to 1914 as 6th Prime Minister of Australia, while on the stage Peter Cook was the comedian, writer and satirist known for his comedy partnership with Dudley Moore.
