“Brighter hence the honour” is the motto of the proud Clan Buchanan, whose ancient roots can be traced back through the mists of time to Loch Lomondside and Perthshire. Stalwart in the cause of Scotland’s freedom and independence, the Chief of the Clan and his kinsfolk fought at the side of the great warrior king Robert the Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314, achieving a glorious victory over the army of England’s Edward 11. The clan gained high honours and distinction, with George Buchanan serving as tutor to both Mary Queen of Scots and, later, her son James V1 of Scotland, future James 1 of England. In later centuries, James Buchanan served as U.S. President from 1857 to 1861, while in the boxing ring Edinburgh-born Kenny Buchanan secured the title of World Light Weight Champion in 1970. Recounted here is the colourful tale of the Buchanans.
